About Us

We are a new coalition of antiwar organizations, peace and justice advocates, and citizens of conscience who challenge our elected leaders to end the US wars of aggression in Afghanistan and Iraq and bring our troops home.

Our Purpose

We call for active, non-violent non-cooperation with US war policy. As we vigorously oppose a military escalation in Afghanistan, we encourage mass political mobilization and high-profile antiwar political actions across the country. As America continues to commit war crimes for the profit of the few and at the expense of the many, we engage and energize our fellow citizens to become disablers of war party mentality. We reject defeatist thinking and futile rationales by promoting effective war protest. We break cycles of hopelessness by engaging in immediate and direct actions, consistent with our commitment to non-violence. We believe our actions will produce the best methods for securing peace in our country and the world, and we direct our allegiance to that end.

Personal Appeal to Peace Leaders from Laurie Dobson, End US Wars Director

Laurie Dobson

November 21, 2009

As peace organizers, we've had our share of difficulties in the last eight years. We all organized against a hostile administration and amassed large protests against Bush's insane policies in his build-up to war.

We all did our share—I held weekly peace rallies and prayer vigils and ran for state office and later U.S. Senate on an anti-war platform. Others have done their part. Finally, after years of agony, our voices were heard, and we voted to elect a Democratic President, hoping for a shift in war policy.

With Obama we prayed for a change, but we were sorely disappointed; we didn't get the change we need. Here we are again, on the brink of another critical point, as he prepares to flood Afghanistan with a surge of military power.

We did not shrink from our duty with Bush back then, but now? Understandably, many have held back and tried to give Obama the time he needs to alter our policies. Then, we gave him the benefit of a doubt. Still, no change in war policy. Now we must act again, as we did with Bush, or our movement will lose a critical time in which to act to influence this commitment of troops. We must show the Administration that we are up to the challenge by refusing to accept this plan for extended warfare.

What we are proposing with the anti-escalation letter and rally on December 12 is to help President Obama by the forces of compassionate entreaty, determined persuasion and open, unified opposition.

Obama has been given a clear direction and shown a clear consequence in the Open Letter we have widely distributed this month. What we are asking the peace organizations, and all of you, is that we stand against this escalation, poised to withdraw our support for him as an entire movement, if he chooses to commit to deep involvement in Afghanistan, continues to escalate attacks elsewhere, and fails to retreat from Iraq.

We know that anti-war people represent a large part of Obama's base and he is vulnerable on the left, as Bush never was. This is a job that falls directly to us—to make our protests register with the same concentrated power which we used against Bush's war policies, now taken on by Obama toward an uncertain and unthinkable direction. We must shudder for the future if we do not act now; as Gandhi said, the ends are implicit in the means.

If we fail to oppose Obama directly on this, we are not just guilty of inaction and misplaced priorities; we are guilty of hypocrisy and callous indifference to our fellow man. Our groups have combined together for principle in past actions; let us not divide now for any reason; particularly, let us not become mired in partisan politics, imprudence or pessimism which can only sabotage our necessary unification of efforts.

We are calling at this time for all the peace groups to come together for one purpose and one purpose alone—to deliver a message of fervent opposition to the President's planned escalation of the Afghanistan War.

The organization End US Wars, named by Cynthia McKinney, is an organization formed exclusively to fight the escalation of the Afghanistan War. In addition to fighting this escalation, the mission of End US Wars is stated in the name: to end our US wars.

We are specifically demanding that the President keep his promise and end the Iraq War and in addition, end the Afghanistan War, to clear Predator drone attacks over Pakistan, and to move in a direction of reconstruction and recovery from war in the areas we have invaded.

Our demands must be expressed loudly and repeated until they are acted upon: our message must become the new US policy. We must not alter our course: since the President has not voluntarily relinquished the attacks on foreign soil, we must be the ones to force him to end these wars. We must be the ones to compel him to quit the battlefield.

We can petition Congress to do their essential part, and we will, with the power of the purse. We can defeat the corporate control of war with our united buying power. We can change Obama's decision on war. How can we accomplish this? By keeping our energies working undivided, by cooperating together, and by being determined to oppose the present US war policy through immediate action.

This is our intent in the Open Letter which we are asking every peace group to endorse and send to their lists. This is the intention behind the rally on December 12, an emergency anti-escalation rally.

For Obama to change his policy he has said that we must act to force him. What are we waiting for? The President is practically begging us to tell him NO ESCALATION. Please sign this letter, endorse the emergency anti-escalation rally on December 12, come to the rally if you can, get your organization to attend and provide support and speakers. Every single peace organizer is critical to this effort: we all are needed at the frontline of this battle. There is no time to waste. This decision is in OUR hands and will fail only if we do not work together to make it succeed.

We CAN do this. The titans we defy are not invincible. They can be opposed. They can be defeated. As Cynthia McKinney wrote back to me, "They must be opposed and they will be defeated." She went on to say, "There is no retreat from our position that is right. I am not concerned about a 'paucity' of co-signers. I understand all of the gyrations and you are correct that now is not the time to retreat from our principled position. The gyrations come now because they can no longer spin a core group of us into meaningless action that masks their true position."

Cynthia McKinney and others important to the peace movement have agreed to join with us, and will come to speak and also to have their messages read: we have confirmed speakers and some who are coming on board very soon.

We need your support NOW, not later. Will you help by endorsing our rally from your organization and by endorsing the letter now?

Thank you, in peace and unity of purpose,

Laurie Dobson
Director, End US Wars

*Update, December 7, 2009:

Dear Friends,

There has been great interest from the peace community regarding this upcoming rally, and response from many who wish to become involved in our outreach and media efforts. We have a guide for this on our Spread the Word page, to assist people in learning what they can do to conduct immediate "guerilla-style" media efforts.

The importance of this emergency rally cannot be overstated: we are the only national collective action against Obama's call for extended war in Afghanistan and beyond. As such, it is imperative that all those who can must gear up to answer this call for a massive outcry. We must come together to oppose this abominable war plan and we must do so now, not later.

We are counting on your help. If you are at all able to assist, the focus at this point is on outreach and media contacts. Please do what you can to get the word out. Please let us know what you are doing and where you are getting the message across.

Thank you for all you are doing – and are going to do this week, in order to make this rally a success! It takes every one of us to do this, and we count on you and on each other.

Laurie Dobson
